Minnesota Suicide Prevention Student Video Competition

DSC_0082.JPG Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE), the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) are pleased to congratulate Breckenridge High School, winner of the Minnesota Suicide Prevention Student Video Competition.

Breckenridge was selected from a field of 13 participants representing schools throughout Minnesota. The video produced by Breckenridge was chosen by a review committee comprised of experts from the field of suicide prevention and representatives from SAVE and the MSHSL. The 6-minute video was selected for its overall production quality and for its outstanding depiction of students taking action to identify a suicidal classmate and taking the proper steps necessary to help their friend. In addition to a cash prize of $750, the video will be distributed to schools throughout the state through MSHSL as a public service message for home room and health classes.

The competition is part of a state-wide suicide prevention public awareness campaign produced by SAVE and funded through a grant from MDH.  The awareness campaign included multi-media public service announcements, education materials and technical training programs. Suicide is a public health crisis that is the 11th leading cause of death in the U.S. and the 2nd leading cause of death among 10-24 year olds in Minnesota.

The goal of the competition was to produce videos for teens by teens that demonstrate students' ability to creatively portray positive messages of suicide prevention. The videos are intended to raise awareness for suicide prevention; shed light on the fact that teens can make a difference in the life of a friend who is suffering with mental illnesses and may be suicidal and encourages students to help. Schools interested in participating were invited to submit in writing ideas for concepts for a student generated suicide prevention video. The concepts were reviewed by the selection committee and the top three submissions were selected to proceed with full production.
