Suicide Awareness events feature Suicide Attempt Survivor
Nationally recognized speakers Kevin Hines and Dr. Dan Reidenberg discuss suicide prevention for youth and families.
(Minneapolis – October 19, 2009) – Kevin Hines, who survived a suicide attempt off the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, CA. and was featured in the documentary “The Bridge,” and Dr. Dan Reidenberg, Executive Director of Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE) who is recognized as an expert in the field of suicide prevention, will appear at two suicide awareness presentations on October 27 at Maple Grove Senior High School and on October 28 at Rogers High School. Both events start at 6:30 p.m., are free and open to the public.
Presented by Soup it Up for Kids and Cox Insurance, the events offer parents and families throughout Minneapolis and Saint Paul the chance to learn about the warning signs of suicide and prevention resources that are available. Suicide is a public health crisis that is the 11th leading cause of death in the U.S. and the 2nd leading cause of death among 10-24 year olds in Minnesota.
The week culminates with Soup It Up for Kids on October 29, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Midland Hills Country Club in Roseville. Soup it Up is an event that supports organizations which have a positive influence on our youth, including SAVE, Camp Odayin, Parenting with Purpose and Northern Clay Center. In addition, several local scholarships will be awarded from the proceeds of the event. Since October 2004, Cox Insurance has organized and sponsored this event and has raised over $500,000. Participants receive a pottery bowl made by local potters, soup and bread. The event includes a silent and live auction. Tickets are $40 and available at www.soupitup.org.
