Senate Commerce Chair Ted Cruz said Wednesday that the committee would mark up the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA, S.1748) next week. SAVE – Suicide Awareness Voices of Education, a national nonprofit dedicated to ending the tragedy of suicide, has been working alongside parent advocates to pass this important legislation and protect children and families from online harms.

“SAVE is pleased to see the Chair has scheduled KOSA markup for next week,” said Erich Mische, CEO of SAVE. “KOSA provides the strongest protections for our children and holds platforms accountable for the harms their products are designed to cause.”

“SAVE extends its gratitude to Senator Cruz for remaining steadfast in his commitment to getting KOSA signed into law by the end of the year. We also extend our thanks to U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell, Marsha Blackburn, and Richard Blumenthal for their continued support, and to Minnesota’s own U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar who has been a leader in the fight to pass KOSA.”

Every day that KOSA is stalled, more children are exposed to online harms, which may increase the risk of suicidal ideation. “Families have waited long enough,” Mische said. “We urge the Senate Commerce Committee to advance KOSA as written and without amendments, so both chambers can begin the work to reconcile and strengthen their versions into the strongest child online safety legislation possible.”

KOSA. Mark it. Pass it. Sign it.
