Suicide Awareness Voices of Education calls lawsuit filed by Big Tech funded organization, an assault on online measures to protect children from the harms of Social Media
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – April 29, 2026 – SAVE – Minnesota-based national suicide prevention non-profit, SAVE-Suicide Awareness Voices of Education, today condemned the lawsuit filed by NetChoice seeking to block Minnesota’s new social media warning label law, calling the legal challenge another attempt by Big Tech to avoid accountability for the documented harms social media is having on children and families.
The Minnesota law requires social media platforms to display warning labels informing users and parents about known mental health risks associated with social media use among youth.
“NetChoice can try to frame this lawsuit as a fight about free speech, but at its core it is really about Big Tech using millions of dollars, lawyers, and lobbyists to defeat measures intended to protect children and families online,” said Erich Mische, CEO of SAVE. “Minnesota’s warning label law does not ban speech or prevent adults from accessing content online. It simply provides parents and young people with information about documented risks associated with social media use.
Mische added that warning labels exist on products tied to public health and safety concerns every day in America and that recent court rulings holding Big Tech accountable for the harms it inflicts on children make it increasingly clear that courts, juries, and the public are no longer willing to simply take Big Tech at its word when it comes to child safety and online harms.
“Social media should not be treated as untouchable simply because Big Tech does not like being held accountable for the harms its products inflict on children, said Mische. “Big Tech, like Big Tobacco before it, can continue fighting common sense measures designed to protect public safety. SAVE will continue fighting for stronger online protections for youth, greater transparency, and more accountability when it comes to the harmful impact social media is having on children and families.”
SAVE strongly supported passage of the Minnesota warning label law and said it will continue working alongside parents, young people, lawmakers, educators, and advocates to strengthen protections for children from the documented harms of the online world.
The organization also reaffirmed its support for broader online safety measures, including age-appropriate design standards, transparency requirements, and federal legislation such as the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA).
